Headline THE STORM ROLLS IN!
A new junior basketball club is rolling into our local area, under the new name of the ‘THE STORM’. They will be based at the new state of the art training facility at the Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing.
Under the guidance of Worthing Thunder’s Head Coach and Ex England International Mr Gary Smith and other Coaches. The coaches are looking forward to passing on their experience and knowledge to the new players ‘There is so much potential and great coaching in our local area, we know this because of so many of our junior athletes are playing at national & international level in the area ’ said Gary Smith.
With innovative ways to train recruits from across the local area & county, it will demonstrate its ability to connect with players, and to get the maximum out of their talent. Each child will be given ‘individual development plans and guidance’.
Everything is set in place all the facilities and get an extremely experienced and unique set of coaches together, to teach young people in the local area’. We strongly believe in Basketball for ALL, we have set up a bursary for parents whom are on low incomes, which will subsidise the cost of training. This can be set up very discreetly by contact admin@srwastorm.com, and we want to ensure money issues do not stop children playing Basketball! Jon Fletcher, the Commercial Manager of THE STORM. We have received many messages of support from NBA Superstars such as Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic,
Shawn Marion of the NBA Champions Dallas Mavericks and Drew Sullivan the Team GB captain.
The club is hoping now to attract new and up and coming talent from the local & Sussex Area from ages 5+ through Under 11’s, 12’s, 14’s, 16’s, 18’s. The club is also keen to develop a Girls teams and an Additional Needs Programmes at the club starts at the End of September. With the Junior Academy, Coached by Eloise & Bob all set to go, Their role at the Academy is to teach the Fundamentals of Basketball, but more than just this, it is to support and develop a young person’s confidence and to nurture a belief in themselves and their teammates, not just Basketball Skills but Skills for Life. Let’s face it even Michael Jordan needed to be taught by someone! He was also told that he would be too small for basketball! How wrong they were. The readers will be interested to know that from this local area we have produced many England Internationals at School age! And many from the local area and many play at National League standard! Competing with the ‘best of the best’ from the UK and abroad.
THE STORM wants to bring the joy and passion of the game of basketball and this is reflected in the coaches when they talk about the Game they Love. ‘There is nothing more satisfying than hearing a swish of a net when the basketball goes through it or you see the moment that a ‘kid just gets a move or pulls a move that an NBA star makes!’ it’s a joy!’
What the club has managed to secure is amazing! The club is also in the throes of aligning itself with the Worthing Thunder to help cross promote both clubs. Frank Gainsbury, Chairman of the Worthing Thunder said ‘we are very happy to help this community club to achieve its full potential for the coming years. We will be working together in the coming months to find innovative ways try to help promote more Basketball in the Sussex area’
Indeed the club has been very innovative as THE STORM has produced a free WIFI service in Liverpool Gardens where you can download the mobile phone applications via WIFI and Bluetooth.

If you have a pre-school child, pram and toddler groups can be great fun.
During the session you can enjoy various different activities with your child.
All parents, grandparents and childminders are welcome to bring their children and babies.
For 70p per family you can get out the house and meet lots of other people (mums, grannies, dads, etc) who are in exactly the same position as you – trying to entertain one or more young children.
Before very long your child will have formed friendships with the other children and babies and they will be happy playing together whilst you enjoy a sit down and making your own new friends!
Please remember the children are to be supervised at all times and they remain your responsibility throughout the session.
All these sessions will be open during term times (except for Holy Week).
We meet in St Symphorian’s Church Hall, Durrington Hill, Worthing, West Sussex BN13 2PU on:Tuesdays and Fridays (10 – 11.30).
During each session we offer a varied range of activities for you and your children to share. We hope you will both enjoy discovering new skills and learning together. Try out new activities whilst sharing this time and helping your child develop physically, mentally and socially.
Please come and join us on one or more sessions a week. This is a great time to meet people and make new friends. We are waiting to meet YOU!
]]>But did you know Personal Development, or Self Development as its also known, has been around for over two thousand years, but in those days what was it known as?
The following quote can be found on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop in Westminster Abbey 1100AD).
“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.
As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.
But it, too, seemed immovable.
As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt,
I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.
And now, as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize:
If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family.
From their inspiration and encouragement,
I would then have been able to better my country, and who knows,
I may have even changed the world.”
The point here is that if he had changed himself first then by example he could go on to change his family, and with their support would be able to go on to greater things.
Remember, change comes from within. You can not change outside influences without changing your thoughts and beliefs first.
So what did these people call Personal Development long ago? We have all heard of the word Faith which means believing in something not yet seen. So believing you can change is the key here.
I will leave you with a quote from Aristotle. (384BC-322BC). “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”

]]>Playing games with your child is entirely different from playing sports with him or her. When in a right age, a kid could play the sport you want him to play. Games are different than sports because games are an amusement or a past time for children while a sport is an athletic activity that will teach your child to acquire skills and physical prowess; sports are used in a competitive nature. That is the difference between games and sports. Sports will enhance the child psychologically and physically. A child is ready if he or she is in the right age to be taught, otherwise you might wait another year to teach your kid the way of a sport.
There are many sports to choose from so it is best to let your kid choose his or her favorite one. When your child chooses what he or she likes, your kid can enjoy his or her chosen sport the best. It would matter that you support with information the sport your kid would choose. But it is essential to let your kid play the sport at the right age. You will know if your kid is ready to play the sport if your child’s age between 6-7 years. When the age is right you can freely teach your kid the joy of athletics and recreation.
You, the parent, could also choose the right sport for your kid. Selecting the right sport for your kid is a decision that a parent should take seriously. The sport that you chose for your kid has to be interesting and exciting for your kid. Your child will definitely participate in the given sport but if your kid doesn’t like the sport you have given him or her, don’t force him or her to play but instead, chose another sport that suits him or her.
Another way to be sure that your kid is ready for sports is if your kid is already going to school. Schools have sports that are essential for the growth of your kid. The athletics that the schools gives are usually team sports like basketball, soccer, or football. Coaches at the kid’s school will be able to teach the kids the value of sports. The teachers of your child will be able to add passion to their hearts and provide them with other athletics information to feed the mind of your kid. Your child will be fond of the sport when all of his teachers, coaches and parents cheer him on in doing the sport even through the times of difficulty.
If a parent could think that their kid is ready, the parent can teach their kid other sports that their school does not offer. The parents have their own experiences from athletics that they have participated when they were young. It is a historical memory that the parents pass down to their kid. The parents would want their kids to experience what they have experienced when they where young. So have time with your kid and teach him or her the ways of the athletics.

]]>What does an ancient Chinese martial art such as Tai Chi have to offer modern day people living in the UK? The slow meditative movements of Tai Chi appear to be at the opposite end of the spectrum to modern day living, yet Tai Chi continues to gain popularity in the West. Popularity alone, however, is rarely an indicator of intrinsic worth (take binge drinking for example!), so how are you to determine whether Tai Chi has something to offer you personally?
This was the question I found myself facing five years ago. Unsure as to why I was even considering the question, I came to the conclusion that nothing could substitute for personal experience and, with some misgivings, I decided to take the plunge.
On hearing that some friends of mine had registered on a ten-week introductory course in Tai Chi starting the very next week, I decided to call the course organiser immediately. Perhaps this was fate, perhaps it was my destiny to study Tai Chi. Fate, however, had deviated from my expectations. The course was fully subscribed.
I felt quite aggrieved that my grand plan had been thwarted. How dare my friends start Tai Chi without me! Although living in a large town there were certainly other teachers available, I failed to overcome this set back and chose the route of apathy. Apparently my aspirations were not particularly resilient, and I comforted myself in the knowledge that at least I had tried.
Ten weeks later my spiritually advanced friends told me that their Tai Chi course had ended and classes were now open to all comers. Although my initial zeal had diminished somewhat, I was left with no excuses and agreed to join them at the next class.
Until we arrived on the following Tuesday I hadn’t recognised the full extent of my apprehensions. My desire to learn Tai Chi had been replaced with an unsettling feeling that I could not place. I realised that I knew next to nothing about Tai Chi, and began thinking, ‘what the hell am I doing here?’. Understanding it was far too late to entertain these thoughts I resolved myself to the fact that I would be there for the next two hours.
The teacher was instantly recognizable. Other than the fact that he was one out of only a few people who was not pacing nervously, or protectively huddled in a small group, he had a distinct air about him along with an intensity and confidence in the eyes. I instantly felt as though it would be futile to try to deceive him in any way, which left me feeling quite vulnerable. It was not that I sensed an intrusive or menacing disposition, in fact quite the opposite. It was simply that the teacher’s calm, authentic attitude demanded a similar openness in return.
The lesson began with a warm up, which involved gentle stretches and rotating of the body and limbs to loosen joints and muscles. This was followed by some simple movement exercises, two-person practice, and the Tai Chi form. Throughout the session the teacher discussed some of the concepts and principles behind Tai Chi. It was stressed that without adherence to these principles, a student of Tai Chi would achieve only minimal benefit from their practice. These concepts were very simple to explain and conceptualise yet proved extremely difficult to put into practice. I left the class feeling confused but yet at the same time some part of me had been inspired and I knew that I would be coming back the next week.
Five years on I still practice Tai Chi and I feel fortunate to have discovered the art when I did. Whilst I have made a great deal of progress, I am beginning to learn the truth that Tai Chi takes time and dedication to learn, and cannot ever really be mastered. This is sometimes one of the most difficult aspects to come to terms with, especially living in our culture of impatience and instant material satisfaction.
This challenge is, however, one of Tai Chi’s greatest assets. The patience that the art demands helps us to step out of the cycle of desire and satisfaction, allowing us to become more present and aware in everyday life. This allows us to face up to things that we have subconsciously been running away from, and to solve problems that we never knew were holding us back.
Tai Chi is often perceived as a mystical thing, something that people often tend to believe to be beyond their understanding or otherwise not deserving of their attention. The truth is that Tai Chi is not supernatural, it is simply a very effective tool that we can use to improve our experience of living. It is true that Tai Chi does appear very alien in our current society, yet just five hundred years ago the concept of a spherical world was also a very alien concept.
Whilst Tai Chi may not be right for everyone my experience has shown me that this ancient art has great potential to improve peoples lives. Tai Chi can be a social activity but it is, ultimately, a personal endeavour. For this reason it is very hard to convey it’s true meaning and merit. The only way to really gain an insight into what Tai Chi is really about is to actually do it. I hope that if you are considering learning this ancient art you will go ahead and ‘take the plunge’.

]]>Here are 5 steps to help you decide.
1. Do your due diligence
In other words do your research on the opportunity. Go through all the web pages and do searches to find out what people are saying about the company.
There are many legitimate business opportunities online today you just have to find them. Make sure there are contact details on the site so you can phone up and have any questions answered. It is a good idea to phone anyway just for peace of mind.
2. Your education starts here.
If you decide to pursue a business online then you must remember there will be a learning curve. Continual learning is the key. Find a business that places importance on training and education and forms part of the opportunity. Most importantly make sure they teach you how to market successfully.
3. What if I am a newbie.
Again make sure that the business helps and encourages the newbie. Check that the training is geared towards the inexperienced marketer.
4. You will have to do some work.
You will have to put in some time and effort into your venture. All businesses need to be worked otherwise you will not make money. Certain parts of the system may be automated and outsourced. Remember, this a business just like any other. Unfortunately, many people are lured by unrealistic promises. Do not be one of them.
5. What you have to bring to the table.
When you have found your opportunity it may take time to get your head around the whole concept, especially if you are new to online marketing. Learn to be persistent. Persistence is the key to developing and maintaining a successful online business.
Have a plan. All businesses have a plan. This is no different. What do you want to achieve. What is your ultimate goal. You will need to employ patience as sometimes you will feel things are not happening as quickly as you would like.
But remember, you walked before you could run. This will be a learning process but with persistence, a burning desire to succeed and having focus on your ultimate goal you will get there.

]]>Below are 4 ways in which we can achieve this and if carried out you will find your motivation levels will increase as your focus improves.
1. Make your goals clear, defined and visual.
Many people when asked what their goal is they say they want a new sports car or a big house. This is too vague as it doesn’t allow the creative forces to work. As an important part of setting goals is visualisation, how can you visualise the sports car you want for example when there are hundreds of models around.
You need to define your goal more clearly. Know exactly what make, model, derivative, colour what extras you want. Then find a picture of this car from a magazine or dealer’s brochure and place where you can see it everyday.
When you feel down or discouraged look at your picture, feel you already own it, imagine yourself behind the wheel driving in the country. Immerse yourself in your goal.
2. Prepare a daily action list.
To be successful you must remain focused. To remain focused you must plan. To plan you must write down your daily action list.
At the end of each day write down your tasks you need to accomplish the next day. By writing them down and ticking them off as you complete them you will experience a sense of achievement.
This schedule must be done daily to be effective.
3. Keep a positive mental attitude.
Always focus on the good things the positive things in life. Keep your thoughts positive and you will feel better about yourself. Believe your goals will come true.
Write an intangible goal on a piece of card and read it at least twice a day. For example ‘My thoughts always remain positive and I only see the good in all situations’.
Reading inspirational books will also help to keep your motivational levels high. These can be self development books or autobiographies. Reading these types of books will make you feel encouraged and be instrumental in motivating you to achieving your goals.
4. Surround yourself with positive successful people.
If you associate with too many negative people they will eventually bring you down to their level of thinking and this will affect your self esteem and you will start to question if you have what it takes to be successful.
Don’t listen to them, or better still do not associate with them. To keep yourself motivated surround yourself with positive people.
Written by Dave McPherson
]]>1. Smile.
Some people say it takes less effort to smile than to frown. In other words it is much easy to smile. Smile at every occasion. When someone says hello to you say hello back with a big smile. Of course the smile has to be genuine. You will feel better and you will make the other person feel better about themselves.
2. Be grateful for what you already have.
They say be grateful and thankful for what we have in our lives, and that is so true. Think about all the good things in your life know. Your family, friends life itself. Remind yourself of this everyday.
3. Avoid negative people.
Avoid people with only negative things to say about life. If you talk to them and join in their conversations they will bring you down to their level and you will become one of them, a negative thinker. Associate yourself with happy, positive people and you will feel better for it.
4. Love makes the world go round.
Show you feelings and affections to people you come in contact with. Express your love and friendship at every opportunity.
5. Feel alive – get out and about.
Take regular exercise, even if it is just going for a walk. The fresh air will make you feel alive and you will feel better for it.
6. Make other people happy – pay them a compliment.
If you make other people feel good about themselves you in turn will feel good about yourself. If your wife/husband buys a new outfit say how great they look. If your work colleagues do a good job on a project, tell them. If a sales person gives you good service make a point of telling them you were impressed. Pay compliments at every opportunity and do it with a smile. You will walk away knowing you will have made them feel better about themselves.
7. Laugh.
They say laughter is the best medicine. Watch your favourite comedy film or comedian and laugh as loud as you like. You will feel better for the experience.
Make a decision now to become a happy person. We all have choices in our life and they are down to your thinking. To be happy is quite simple – just make up your mind to be.

]]>Welcome to the Church of St Symphorian , Durrington. The first historical reference of this place is to be found in the Domesday Book. In the reign of William II, the patronage was given to the Monastery of Sele (Beeding)
In Anglo-Saxon times, when Durrington was known as Derentun, there was a small Chapel of plaster and thatch called wattle. In the early 13th Century this was replaced with a building, having a chancel and nave constructed of flint and stone, and probably roofed with Horsham ‘tiles’. This particular style would have been much in keeping with many smaller churches which still survive on the South Downs and coastal plain of Sussex.
Documents survive which suggest that the Chancel was separated from the nave by a rood screen, open in its upper part so that worshippers could share in the Divine Office being performed by the Priest in the Chancel. The Rood Screen was surmounted by a loft, often referred to in medieval documents as a Solar. Its main purpose was to accommodate a few choristers or a small organ.
The steeple of the Chapel was built to carry the bell. This was little more than a raised bell cote above the gable end in a wooden structure. It was built in the western bay of the nave roof, and covered externally with boarding.
Around 1260, the Saxon windows were taken out and the present 13th Century windows were put in.
The church remained much the same, with regular acts of worship, until the 1660’s when the parish became caught up in the Civil War. The Rev. William Stanley was an ardent politician on the Royalist side whilst most of his parishioners were Cromwellians. Around 1643, the Chapel was partially demolished by the inhabitants of Durrington who naturally did not see eye-to-eye with their incumbent. This is a somewhat drastic way to register your displeasure towards the local Vicar! Things went from bad to worse in the years that followed, it was suggested that the Vicar neglected his duties and that he reviled the people of Durrington and spoke maliciously to them when they came to worship, and the poor were constrained by threats and fears.
By 1677 the Chapel was declared “unusfull for the performing of Divine Service” having been in decay for some time, and that the “Ruines thereof was chiefly occasioned by souldjers of the late warrs”. Despite attempts to repair the Chapel, it was eventually agreed that the people of Durrington be allowed to worship, baptise and bury at Tarring Church. On 24th January 1680, with the agreement of both parishes, the then Dean of Chichester, Dr. Thomas Briggs, took steps to unite the Chapelry to Tarring Church. Records show that the Chapel was still occasionally used for many years.
In 1890, the Rev. Canon Henry Bailey, Rector of Tarring, erected a small Mission Room at his own expense and left it upon trust to the inhabitants of Durrington for the performance of Divine Service. It was built adjoining the east wall of the ruined Chapel and afternoon services were held every Sunday at 3.30pm and Holy Communion at 8am on the last Sunday of the month.
Towards the latter part of the 19th Century, thoughts turned to restoring the Chapel and the funds began to be raised. Unfortunately the fundraising came to an end when the Rev. Dr. Springett, Rector of Tarring and the person leading the fund raising effort, was moved to Brixton in 1898.
When extensive repairs were needed to the Mission Room, enthusiasm was rekindled for the restoration work. However, it was not until 14th July 1914, when the “Ancient Township and Chappelry of Durrington was constituted as a separate Ecclesiastical Parish” that things began to happen. Rev. William Edward Dixon Penfold was appointed Vicar of Durrington and during his early ministry work began on the restoration of the church.
Part of the old building was incorporated in the present one, using the foundation of the north wall, and part of the south and west walls and extending the nave. The dedication of the original church is unknown but on 13th October 1915 the new church was dedicated to St. Symphorian and was consecrated on 15th December 1916. The chancel and vestries were added and the final work was dedicated by Bishop Bell on 3rd September 1941.
There have been a number of historic events in St. Symphorian’s:-
Petertide 1986, Bishop Colin of Horsham ordained four men to the priesthood. This was the first ordination service to be held in this church.
In 1987, one of the services to admit women to Holy Orders took place here when eight women were ordained Deacon by Bishop Colin of Horsham.
Over the years many faithful souls have worked to maintain and improve the centre of Christian witness in Durrington. There is much to thank God for and so our celebrations are as much about the Church as a people as the building. May the love and devotion which has brought us thus far continue in the years to come.
