Einstein_1921_by_F_Schmutzer_-_restorationDid you know that Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old and did not read until he was seven? His parents and teachers worried about his mental ability.

Or that Beethoven’s music teacher said about him, “As a composer he is hopeless”? What if young Ludwig believed it?

When Thomas Edison was a young boy, his teachers said he was so stupid he could never learn anything. He once said, “I remember I used to never be able to get along at school. I was always at the foot of my class…my father thought I was stupid, and I almost decided that I was a dunce.” What if young Thomas believed what they said about him?

When F. W. Woolworth was 21, he got a job in a store, but was not allowed to wait on customers because, according to his boss, he “didn’t have enough sense.” I wonder if the boss was around when Woolworth became one of the most successful retailers of his day.

When the sculptor Auguste Rodin was young he had difficulty learning to read and write. Today, we may say he had a learning disability, but his father said of him, “I have an idiot for a son.” His uncle agreed. “He’s uneducable,” he said. What if the boy had doubted his ability to excel?

A newspaper editor once fired Walt Disney because he was thought to have no “good ideas.” The great Italian tenor Enrico Caruso was told by one music teacher, “You can’t sing. You have no voice at all.” And an editor told Louisa May Alcott, just a few years before she wrote the classic novel Little Women, that she was incapable of writing anything that would have popular appeal.

History will long praise each of these famous people, but what became of their critics? Nobody even remembers some of their names, which is all that need be said.

But what if these young people had listened to those critical voices and became discouraged? Where would our world be without the music of Beethoven and Caruso, the art of Rodin, the ideas of Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison, the imagination of Walt Disney or the literary contributions of Louisa May Alcott? As it was so accurately put, “It’s not what you are, it’s what you don’t become that hurts.” (That from Oscar Levant.) What if these people had not become what they were capable becoming, had not done what they actually could have accomplished, just because they were discouraged by people who couldn’t see them for what they were?

We all have potential and, whether you realize it or not, your desire to do or be more than you are is your best indicator of future success. Others may discourage you, but the most important voice to listen to is your own. Do you believe in you?

Still the voices of your critics. Listen intently to your own voice, to the person who knows you best. Then answer these questions: Do you think you should move ahead? How will you feel if you quit pursuing this thing you want to do? And what does your best self advise?
What you hear may change your life.

Also there will be quotes on a regular basis from some of the many famous philosopher’s or motivational speakers and authors.

I will share with you some of the quotes that have inspired me.

Under ‘Lifestyle/Personal Development’ you will find some articles I have already written. Please read and enjoy.

How Long as Personal Development Been Around For? http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/05/10/how-long-as-personal-development-been-around-for/ Tue, 10 May 2011 00:45:07 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=1405 [continue reading...]]]> Ask people how long Personal Development has been around for and they will probably say only a short time and quote motivational speakers like Tony Robbins as bringing this concept to the world.

But did you know Personal Development, or Self Development as its also known, has been around for over two thousand years, but in those days what was it known as?

The following quote can be found on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop in Westminster Abbey 1100AD).

“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.

As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.

But it, too, seemed immovable.

As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt,

I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.

And now, as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize:

If I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family.

From their inspiration and encouragement,
I would then have been able to better my country, and who knows,
I may have even changed the world.”

The point here is that if he had changed himself first then by example he could go on to change his family, and with their support would be able to go on to greater things.

Remember, change comes from within. You can not change outside influences without changing your thoughts and beliefs first.

So what did these people call Personal Development long ago? We have all heard of the word Faith which means believing in something not yet seen. So believing you can change is the key here.

I will leave you with a quote from Aristotle. (384BC-322BC). “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”

Tai Chi – A Beginner’s Guide http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/02/28/tai-chi-a-beginners-guide/ Mon, 28 Feb 2011 14:36:20 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=794 [continue reading...]]]>

What does an ancient Chinese martial art such as Tai Chi have to offer modern day people living in the UK? The slow meditative movements of Tai Chi appear to be at the opposite end of the spectrum to modern day living, yet Tai Chi continues to gain popularity in the West. Popularity alone, however, is rarely an indicator of intrinsic worth (take binge drinking for example!), so how are you to determine whether Tai Chi has something to offer you personally?

This was the question I found myself facing five years ago. Unsure as to why I was even considering the question, I came to the conclusion that nothing could substitute for personal experience and, with some misgivings, I decided to take the plunge.

On hearing that some friends of mine had registered on a ten-week introductory course in Tai Chi starting the very next week, I decided to call the course organiser immediately. Perhaps this was fate, perhaps it was my destiny to study Tai Chi. Fate, however, had deviated from my expectations. The course was fully subscribed.

I felt quite aggrieved that my grand plan had been thwarted. How dare my friends start Tai Chi without me! Although living in a large town there were certainly other teachers available, I failed to overcome this set back and chose the route of apathy. Apparently my aspirations were not particularly resilient, and I comforted myself in the knowledge that at least I had tried.

Ten weeks later my spiritually advanced friends told me that their Tai Chi course had ended and classes were now open to all comers. Although my initial zeal had diminished somewhat, I was left with no excuses and agreed to join them at the next class.

Until we arrived on the following Tuesday I hadn’t recognised the full extent of my apprehensions. My desire to learn Tai Chi had been replaced with an unsettling feeling that I could not place. I realised that I knew next to nothing about Tai Chi, and began thinking, ‘what the hell am I doing here?’. Understanding it was far too late to entertain these thoughts I resolved myself to the fact that I would be there for the next two hours.

The teacher was instantly recognizable. Other than the fact that he was one out of only a few people who was not pacing nervously, or protectively huddled in a small group, he had a distinct air about him along with an intensity and confidence in the eyes. I instantly felt as though it would be futile to try to deceive him in any way, which left me feeling quite vulnerable. It was not that I sensed an intrusive or menacing disposition, in fact quite the opposite. It was simply that the teacher’s calm, authentic attitude demanded a similar openness in return.

The lesson began with a warm up, which involved gentle stretches and rotating of the body and limbs to loosen joints and muscles. This was followed by some simple movement exercises, two-person practice, and the Tai Chi form. Throughout the session the teacher discussed some of the concepts and principles behind Tai Chi. It was stressed that without adherence to these principles, a student of Tai Chi would achieve only minimal benefit from their practice. These concepts were very simple to explain and conceptualise yet proved extremely difficult to put into practice. I left the class feeling confused but yet at the same time some part of me had been inspired and I knew that I would be coming back the next week.

Five years on I still practice Tai Chi and I feel fortunate to have discovered the art when I did. Whilst I have made a great deal of progress, I am beginning to learn the truth that Tai Chi takes time and dedication to learn, and cannot ever really be mastered. This is sometimes one of the most difficult aspects to come to terms with, especially living in our culture of impatience and instant material satisfaction.

This challenge is, however, one of Tai Chi’s greatest assets. The patience that the art demands helps us to step out of the cycle of desire and satisfaction, allowing us to become more present and aware in everyday life. This allows us to face up to things that we have subconsciously been running away from, and to solve problems that we never knew were holding us back.

Tai Chi is often perceived as a mystical thing, something that people often tend to believe to be beyond their understanding or otherwise not deserving of their attention. The truth is that Tai Chi is not supernatural, it is simply a very effective tool that we can use to improve our experience of living. It is true that Tai Chi does appear very alien in our current society, yet just five hundred years ago the concept of a spherical world was also a very alien concept.

Whilst Tai Chi may not be right for everyone my experience has shown me that this ancient art has great potential to improve peoples lives. Tai Chi can be a social activity but it is, ultimately, a personal endeavour. For this reason it is very hard to convey it’s true meaning and merit. The only way to really gain an insight into what Tai Chi is really about is to actually do it. I hope that if you are considering learning this ancient art you will go ahead and ‘take the plunge’.

4 Ways to Motivate Yourself to True Success http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/02/17/4-ways-to-motivate-yourself-to-true-success/ Thu, 17 Feb 2011 16:11:00 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=581 [continue reading...]]]> Many of us seem to experience a lack of motivation at some point in our time. But how can we re-kindle the motivational fire within us so we can have true success.

Below are 4 ways in which we can achieve this and if carried out you will find your motivation levels will increase as your focus improves.

1. Make your goals clear, defined and visual.

Many people when asked what their goal is they say they want a new sports car or a big house. This is too vague as it doesn’t allow the creative forces to work. As an important part of setting goals is visualisation, how can you visualise the sports car you want for example when there are hundreds of models around.

You need to define your goal more clearly. Know exactly what make, model, derivative, colour what extras you want. Then find a picture of this car from a magazine or dealer’s brochure and place where you can see it everyday.

When you feel down or discouraged look at your picture, feel you already own it, imagine yourself behind the wheel driving in the country. Immerse yourself in your goal.

2. Prepare a daily action list.

To be successful you must remain focused. To remain focused you must plan. To plan you must write down your daily action list.

At the end of each day write down your tasks you need to accomplish the next day. By writing them down and ticking them off as you complete them you will experience a sense of achievement.

This schedule must be done daily to be effective.

3. Keep a positive mental attitude.

Always focus on the good things the positive things in life. Keep your thoughts positive and you will feel better about yourself. Believe your goals will come true.

Write an intangible goal on a piece of card and read it at least twice a day. For example ‘My thoughts always remain positive and I only see the good in all situations’.

Reading inspirational books will also help to keep your motivational levels high. These can be self development books or autobiographies. Reading these types of books will make you feel encouraged and be instrumental in motivating you to achieving your goals.

4. Surround yourself with positive successful people.

If  you associate with too many negative people they will eventually bring you down to their level of thinking and this will affect your self esteem and you will start to question if you have what it takes to be successful.

Don’t listen to them, or better still do not associate with them. To keep yourself motivated surround yourself with positive people.

Happiness is in the Mind – 7 Secrets to uncover the Happy Habit http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/02/09/happiness-is-in-the-mind-7-secrets-to-uncover-the-happy-habit/ Wed, 09 Feb 2011 15:54:34 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=554 [continue reading...]]]> Being happy is a state of mind. If you make up your mind to always be happy you will live a more enriched life. But how do you remain in a state of happiness? Here are 7 steps to obtain the happy habit.

1. Smile.

Some people say it takes less effort to smile than to frown. In other words it is much easy to smile. Smile at every occasion. When someone says hello to you say hello back with a big smile. Of course the smile has to be genuine. You will feel better and you will make the other person feel better about themselves.

2. Be grateful for what you already have.

They say be grateful and thankful for what we have in our lives, and that is so true. Think about all the good things in your life know. Your family, friends life itself. Remind yourself of this everyday.

3. Avoid negative people.

Avoid people with only negative things to say about life. If you talk to them and join in their conversations they will bring you down to their level and you will become one of them, a negative thinker. Associate yourself with happy, positive people and you will feel better for it.

4. Love makes the world go round.

Show you feelings and affections to people you come in contact with. Express your love and friendship at every opportunity.

5. Feel alive – get out and about.

Take regular exercise, even if it is just going for a walk. The fresh air will make you feel alive and you will feel better for it.

6. Make other people happy – pay them a compliment.

If you make other people feel good about themselves you in turn will feel good about yourself. If your wife/husband buys a new outfit say how great they look. If your work colleagues do a good job on a project, tell them. If a sales person gives you good service make a point of telling them you were impressed. Pay compliments at every opportunity and do it with a smile. You will walk away knowing you will have made them feel better about themselves.

7. Laugh.

They say laughter is the best medicine. Watch your favourite comedy film or comedian and laugh as loud as you like. You will feel better for the experience.

Make a decision now to become a happy person. We all have choices in our life and they are down to your thinking. To be happy is quite simple – just make up your mind to be.

People who drink beer or spirits moderately – which is less than every day – or who drink only wine, do not run the same risks.

Researchers say they were shocked by the findings, which show a direct link between heavy drinking and an increased risk for esophageal, stomach, colon, liver, pancreatic, lung and prostate cancers. The greatest risk was for esophageal cancer, with a sevenfold increase, but heavy drinkers also face an 80 per cent increased risk for colon cancer, and 50 per cent for lung cancer.

The researchers, from the University of Montreal, used data originally collected in the 1980s for a cancer study in the city.

It can help you enjoy a more active life, especially if you are suffering from a heart or lung problem.

Research earlier this year showed that the juice extended exercise time among athletes by 16 per cent – but the same researchers have discovered that the elderly or those with a health problem can enjoy similar benefits.

In a new study, researchers at the University of Exeter discovered that the juice helped people use less oxygen when walking, reducing the effort by 12 per cent.

The juice widens the blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and allows more blood to flow, and also reduces the amount of oxygen needed by muscles.

Placebo research discovers our mind is more powerful than drugs http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/01/16/placebo-research-discovers-our-mind-is-more-powerful-than-drugs/ Sun, 16 Jan 2011 13:55:22 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=439 [continue reading...]]]> Our mind could be a more active healing force than the drugs we are prescribed, researchers have discovered this week.

Researchers made the discovery when they researched the ‘placebo effect’, a standard procedure in drugs research where the patient is given a ‘sugar pill’ instead of the drug, but is not told what he’s been given. The placebo is supposed to eliminate the possibility of positive thinking, and so any beneficial effect beyond that must be down to the drug itself.

But researchers from Harvard Medical School wanted to know if the placebo effect still worked when the patient knows he is taking a useless sugar pill. To find out, they gave placebo pills to 40 IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) patients, while another 40 were given nothing at all. The placebo group was told the tablets were sugar pills, and even the container had the word ‘placebo’ printed on it.

Yet after three weeks, 59 per cent of the placebo reported a significant improvement in their symptoms compared with 35 per cent of those who were not given the placebo. In other words, nearly double the number who took a placebo improved – and to an extent that was equivalent to that expected from a powerful IBS drug.

Researcher Ted Kaptchuk was baffled by the results, but thinks the placebo effect has more to do with medical ritual than merely positive thinking – even when the brain knows it is being deceived.

The faster you walk, the longer you live, researchers have found after studying the walking speeds of 34,485 people aged 65 years and older.

The difference in walking speed becomes especially significant once you reach the age of 75, say researchers from the University of Pittsburgh. While the average walking speed is around 0.8 meters (2.6 feet) a second, those who walked at the faster tempo of 1 meter (3.3 feet) a second were up to 87 per cent more likely to be alive 10 years later if male, and 91 per cent if female.

The researchers say that walking speed is as good a predictor of longevity as medical history – such as blood pressure, obesity and chronic disease – and lifestyle choices, such as smoking.

Food manufacturers use ‘label loophole’ to hide dangerous fats content http://worthing.ukviews.co.uk/2011/01/16/food-manufacturers-use-label-loophole-to-hide-dangerous-fats-content/ Sun, 16 Jan 2011 13:53:06 +0000 http://ukviews.co.uk/worthing/?p=435 [continue reading...]]]> Processed food manufacturers are deliberately misleading the public about one of the most dangerous ingredients in their products. Because of a ‘labelling loophole’, people are eating far more unsaturated fats – or trans fats – than they realise. As a result, they are dramatically increasing their risk of developing chronic health problems such as heart disease.Ideally, people should not be consuming any trans fats, but health authorities reckon that we can eat up to 1.11 grams a day without causing serious health problems. However, people are unwittingly eating far more than that because of the lax controls on food labelling. In the UK, manufacturers don’t even have to mention if their products contain unsaturated fats – and it’s up to the consumer to play detective by finding tell-tale words such as ‘hydrogenated fats’ that indicate the presence of trans fats.In the US, manufacturers must indicate it as an ingredient, but only if the amount exceeds .50 grams. Below that and the manufacturer is allowed to claim zero content, thus misleading people.Eating several processed foods every day – that purportedly contain zero trans fats but, in fact, contain .49 grams – increase the risk of heart disease by 30 per cent.Source: American Journal of Health Promotion, 2011; 23: 157.
