The closest airport to Worthing is Shoreham Airport, about 5 miles (8.0 km) to the east in the district of Adur. It was the first licenced airfield in Britain when it opened in 1911. In 1933 it was bought by a committee, redesignated the Brighton, Hove and Worthing Municipal Airport, and opened under this name on 13 June 1936.  London Gatwick Airport is about 28 miles (45 km) away.  Seaplanes often took off from Worthing beach in the early 20th century
